China's high-speed rail network is incredible. As a foreigner who's traveled on over 30 Chinese trains, here's how to buy tickets without the headache.

**Option 1: Use Trip.com (easiest for beginners)**
- English interface, accepts international credit cards
- Small booking fee (around $3-5 per ticket)
- Can book up to 60 days in advance
- Tickets delivered via email, just show passport at station

**Option 2: Use 12306 official app (cheaper but more complex)**
- Need to create an account with passport verification
- Must complete "passenger verification" at a station window first time
- Once verified, tickets are at official price (no booking fee)
- App is Chinese-only, but browser version has English

**At the station:**
- Arrive 60 minutes before departure
- Use the foreign passport lane at security
- Ticket collection machines work with passports at major stations
- Green tickets are gone – now you just scan your passport!

**Seat types explained:**
- Second class: budget option, 3+2 seating (most common)
- First class: wider seats, 2+2 arrangement (recommended for long trips)
- Business class: very plush, 2+1 or 1+1 (expensive but nice)

My favorite route: Shanghai to Beijing (4.5 hours, around $85 second class). Beats flying every time!
