Asking the experienced travelers here! I'm planning my first trip to China (2 weeks, solo, budget $1500).

What I love: History, street food, walking cities, meeting other travelers.
What I avoid:Crowds (I know, China... but minimizing would be ideal), package tours.

Which city should I fly into? I'm considering:

- Beijing: Pros – Great Wall, Forbidden City, hutongs. Cons – Crowded, more expensive.
- Shanghai: Pros – Easy to navigate, amazing food, futuristic vibe. Cons – Less "traditional" China.
- Hong Kong: Pros – English-friendly, easy for nervous first-timers. Cons – Expensive, feels less like mainland China.
- Chengdu: Pros – Pandas, spicy food, chill vibe. Cons – No direct flights from my home (US West Coast).

My questions:
1. Which arrival city would you recommend for a beginner?
2. Should I book a hostel or hotel as a solo traveler?
3. Can I really rely on Google Translate? Or learn some phrases?

I've been reading everything on this forum (thanks for all the great info!). Just need help with this first big decision.

Thanks in advance!
